How to Choose Guesthouses
Here are some tips on how to select a guest house:
- Check out its location. It would be best if it were located near the city center or at least near large railway stations so that it will save you the time and money of traveling. Also check that you aren't staying in a rundown or area where criminals are active. If you wish to visit a certain place or attraction, try locating guest houses nearby.

- Ask other backpackers and travelers to recommend guesthouses. Most of them will be honest and either recommend the one they staid in or discourage you from going to that guesthouse. Most travelers find guesthouses by hearing about them, and this is definitely the best way to go about it.
- Before you enter a guesthouse, look around and if you can walk to the backside of the building. You will find many places that though look decent from the front, are totally run-down. Looking at the back will give you an idea of the cleanliness of the place as well.
- Before you sign up, ask to see the room and then look at it very closely. Check whether you can shut the doors and windows and lock them if necessary.
- Verify that the guesthouses have a safe and that you can keep your valuable stuff in it.
In any case, since guesthouses are usually cheap, you might run into odd characters or shady people. Beware of people who are acting too friendly or those who want to go out of their way to help.
